METAL MAGNETIC MEMORY (MMM) TECHNOLOGY
EFFECT
Metal Magnetic Memory (MMM) is an after effect which occurs as residual magnetization in parent metal or welded joint formed in the course of fabrication or due to irreversible change of the local magnetization state of parent metal/inspection object in zones of stress conventration or damage under loadings.

In general, MMM is an after effect which is directly correlated with the distribution of natural magnetic feilds and the accumulated stress-stran which has been experienced by the ferrous or paramagmetic material.

PURPOSE
To asses the stress condition in determine the weak area in material based on established correlation between accumulated stress-strain state that has been expereinced by ferrous/paramagnetic material with the distribution of natural magnetic fields.

It is an ISO 24497:2007 recognised passive inspection technology.

Stress Detection Utilizing Metal Magnetic Memory

At the moment, pipelines facilities is the major concern for asset owner. Stress concentration and residual stress has been one of the major cause of structural failure which include the pipelines. The occurrence of stress could come from any metal-state defect and external stresses. Hence, Metal Magnetic Memory (MMM) technology is an inspection technology that was built based on established correlation between the weak area in a structure and the physics of natural magnetic flux (self-magnetic leakage fields (SMLF)) in a ferrous and paramagnetic material.

HOW METAL MAGNETIC MEMORY WORKS

MMM Technology are divided in two main types namely contacting and non-contacting MMM.
a) Contacting MMM
The contact MMM technology has been used in various engineering field such as oil and gas industry, power generation, aviation, railway transport, sea transport and metal structures. This technology can be applied to inspect stress condition in the welding, normal surface sorunder insulation without removing the insulation.
  • The technology is direct-contact with inspection object obtaining the position and actual stress condition of the inspection object
b) Non Contacting MMM (NCMD)
Capable of detecting the maximum high stress segment associated with potentionly problem of the buried pipeline.
  • The Technology is a partial technology combining with contacting MMM Technology. NCMD detection is based directly correlated of natural magnetic fields of inspection
  • object towards the local earth magnetic fields  It provides the location of high stress area of the buried pipe without any excavation required

METAL MAGNETIC MEMORY ADVANTAGES

Early stages of damage mechanism

Inspection of burried pipelinewithout excavation required

No insulation/coating removal and surface preparation
required

Early indication on the potential location which has external damage mechanism

BENEFITS TO THE ORGANIZATION

Production are not affected during inspection as the pipeline operation can be continued without interruption
Prevent potential of leakage and gas explosion
Reduce total maintenance inspection cost
Increase effectiveness of pipeline maintenance

ADDITIONAL INFO

  • By utilizing changes in Earth magnetic field:
    i. No magnetic field generation by equipment
ii. No magnetization of pipe by equipment
    iii. MMM only as receiver

  • • If there have any disturbance (cable) during underground piping inspection might affect the MMM findings
